What to See
I've been here all my life and haven't seen half of what is available in the DC area. Below are some highlights, must-sees or things on my list of 'would like to see...'
- DC -
- If you don't want to walk too much, take the Tourmobile
- Smithsonian & Monuments - most museums are free. Security is enhanced, they'll check your backpacks, etc when you enter. Great place to take a frisbee and kids that need to expend some energy.
- Spy Museum This is brand new...check it out!
- National Zoo - It's "Migratory Bird Weekend"! Zoo is free; parking is nominal.
- Alexandria -
- Mt. Vernon (takes a whole day, the Ms.Christan is a boat that travels down the Potomac from Old Town to Mt. Vernon),
- George Washington Masonic National Memorial -
- Collingwood Library - Chris, this is for you. About 20 minutes from Alexandria, Museum of Americanism, Civil War stuff; Julia - big open lawn for Thomas to run.
- Arlington -
- Pentagon - looks like you can't take a tour anymore, unless you take the virtual tour online. You will be able to see the Pentagon from the reception.
- Arlington National Cemetery
- Iwo Jima Memorial
Parks
Shopping
- Pentagon City Mall (Macy's, Nordstrom's, Best Buy, Borders, movie theater)
- Tyson's I (L.L. Bean, Hecht's, Nordstrom, JC Penney, lots of good stores)
Shows/Tours
Misc other stuff
- Paddle Boats at the Tidal Basin - cool way to see the Cherry Blossoms.
- Washington Sailing Marina - great place to watch planes land & take-off. Sunday is busy at the marina...brunch at the restaurant & a lot of the local one-design boats race on Sunday.
