How to Get Around Town
- By Car
- Don't drive on these roads between 4 and 7 pm: I-395 South, I-66 West; I-495 North between Tysons and Bethesda. >>>Insert a pciture<<<<
You pretty much want to avoid the Outer Loop of 495 between Braddock Rd and I-95 South anytime except 8 pm to 7 am.(even on the weekend!) The G.W. Parkway is a nice scenic drive; southbound from the airport takes you by our marina, through Old Town Alexandria and then on to Mt. Vernon. If you follow it north, it will take you to Arlington Cemetery and exits to the Memorial Bridge to drop you in DC.
- By Metro
- If you are sightseeing & brought your sneekies, this is the most stress free way to go. If you're staying at the Sheraton National, they have a shuttle to the National Airport, there is a metro stop on the Blue & Yellow lines there. Hop on either to get to the Pentagon or Arlington Cemetery. Hop on the Blue, transfer to the Orange (toward New Carrollton) at Rosslyn and you can get off at the Smithsonian stop which puts you in the middle of it all. If you take the Orange line from Rosslyn toward Vienna/Fairfax and get off at Dunn Loring, you're about a mile from mom & dad's house.
- By Cab
- Don't use Alrington's Red Top... I think they take you on the "scenic route" when you're a passenger, but drive like a bat out of ... when they are behind you on the road. Try Blue Top (703-578-1111)or Yellow Cab (703-534-1111 or 703-527-2222). If you're going partying in Georgetown on a Friday or Saturday night, I'd recommend cabbing it. Street parking is scarce; there are garages, but plan to pay $5-10.
- By Foot or Bike
- There are a slew of biking and walking trails in Arlington and a few trails in Alexandria. The Mount Vernon (Loop F on the Arlington trail map) trail is a favorite that runs along the Potomac, lots of picnicing opportunites.
